Cards’ Holliday offer less than $18 mil per
December 12th, 2009 | by Ryan Boyer |GM John Mozeliak confirmed yesterday to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Bernie Miklasz that the Cardinals have extended a formal offer to Matt Holliday. Today, the P-D’s Joe Strauss reports that the offer is for less than $18 million annually.
This doesn’t come as a surprise. A few weeks ago Strauss floated out a possible offer of six years for $96 million, which would be $16 million annually. An offer of six years and $17 million per would come out to $102 million. My expectation is that the offer is likely to be in this range, assuming that the proposal is for six years.
I think there is a pretty decent chance that Holliday would not get more than that figure from anyone else, or, at least not . My concern is that Mo said he expected to hear a decision from Holliday and agent Scott Boras about 48 hours after he extended the offer, and that the team would need to move on shortly after that if a decision had yet to be made. I can’t imagine Holliday would accept an offer this soon, but perhaps it’s just posturing on Mo’s part.
