Freese charged with DWI
December 14th, 2009 | by Ryan Boyer |Potential starting third baseman David Freese was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
GM John Mozeliak acknowledged hearing of the incident Saturday and said Sunday that “we are extremely disappointed upon hearing this.”
I can’t imagine that this significantly hurts Freese’s chances at winning the third base job, but you never know. After all, this is the same organization that saw reliever Josh Hancock die in an alcohol-related accident and manager Tony LaRussa arrested for driving under the influence. Because of these issues they instituted a “no alcohol in the clubhouse” policy.
Should Freese have had too much to drink and got behind the wheel of a car? Of course not, but at the same time, this happens all the time, everywhere, every day. He shouldn’t be treated differently than anyone else.
My fingers are crossed that Mo and Co. don’t use this as an excuse to sign Miguel Tejada.
